The Peace Tree Project
Federation Square
Australians for Peace are proud to present their ‘Peace Tree Project’ to commemorate the UN International Day of Peace.
Set on the steps of Federation Square on Wednesday, September 21, olive trees will line the steps and Australians For Peace (A4P) extends an invitation to the people of Melbourne to write their messages of peace on shipping tags, which will adorn the trees. Each tag will be stamped with a unique Peace Duck drawn by our own Melbourne icon Michael Leunig. The trees will form the beginnings of peace parks to be established in and around Melbourne.
Peace Clowns will provide some extra entertainment the crowds to make this a family friendly event. The event runs from 8AM to 2PM.
St Pauls Cathedral Bells will ring out with the help of the Society of Bell Ringers at 12 noon on World Peace Day.
Peace Bells send a clear message. The message is addressed to all humanity. Peace is precious.
St Pauls Cathedral has one of the few peals of thirteen bells outside the British Isles. The bells were donated by Mr Thomas Dyer Edwardes, whose father had been a landowner in Victoria. The bells were cast in 1889 by the Mears and Stainbank foundry at Whitechapel, London. The total weight of 7 tons 3 cwt made them the heaviest ring from that foundry in the 19th Century and is the world's second oldest complete ring of 12 bells.
